Here’s a recap of news and notes from around the Web that caught my attention over the past week or so.
Box Files for IPO. This should be interesting to watch. While still losing money after $400M in investments, they are seeking to raise $250M. Almost 34k organizations and over 1.75M individuals are PAYING for the platform. When including free users, totals rise to 225k organizations and 25M individuals.
$1B CISCO Intercloud Investment. Cisco is going to be the “engine inside” many cloud offerings, from Telecom companies to software vendors and traditional distribution partners. This goes well beyond IaaS to encompass collaboration, unified communication, mobility, big data, etc. Of note: Openstack and Hadoop are significant elements of the offerings.
Forrester on Corporate Learning from Cloud Infrastructure Providers
Holacracy. A different way of organizing leverage social technology.
What’s gone wrong with democracy. The Economist looks at the decline of the most successful political idea of the 20th century.
History Redux
Posted: April 11, 2014 Filed under: Change | Tags: CSC Exchange, Peter Drucker 2 CommentsWhile cleaning out some old files over the holidays, I was instantly transported back in time—more than 20 years, in fact. In April 1993, I attended a CSC Exchange conference called “Achieving Market Leadership Through Reengineering” in Cambridge, Mass. This invitation-only event featured over 100 sessions over four days organized in five tracks:
• Reengineering Critical Processes
• Managing Large-Scale Change
• Rethinking the I/S Function
• Capitalizing on Technologies
• Considering the Outsourcing Alternative
I had no idea at the time how big reengineering would become, how significant the content would prove to be, and how the speakers would make a lasting impact on the business world. Funny, considering the slides looked they were created on barely more than a typewriter, a far cry from the multi-media extravaganzas that you see at most events today.
One session that has stuck with me all these years was by Peter Drucker called “Institutionalizing Change within the Organization.” I was so taken with him that I even got his autograph on my copy of his book “Post Capitalist Society.”
The thesis from his plenary session holds true today. From the conference agenda: “We talk a great deal about ‘overcoming resistance to change’; Peter Drucker argues that this is the wrong perspective. Instead, organization must become organized for change, must be managed to welcome change, and must be structured to lead change.” Well said.

Interests are many and varied: IT, photography, business theory, travel, sports, the arts. And did I mention biking and coffee?
As I go forward with this blog, you’ll learn more about the inner muse of Mark Baker. What I find interesting or thought-provoking, commentary on what’s new in the world of business and IT, as well as old-style methods that are coming back around again. Let’s begin.
P.S. So are you wondering what ZMAB15 stands for? That was my original user name at Amoco, assigned in 1986. It has endured.
